CBG Oil and CBD Oil – What’s the difference?

Like CBD (and THC which is the compound that causes the ‘high’), CBG or Cannabigerol is a cannabinoid, one of many chemicals found in cannabis plants. 

CBG (cannabigerol) is often referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids.” This is because CBGA, the acidic precursor to CBG, starts off in great abundance in hemp and cannabis plants. Almost all of the CBGA then transforms into CBDA or THCA, but a fraction of it becomes CBG. When used together, cannabinoids CBG and CBD can increase the effectiveness of each other through the phenomenon of the entourage effect.

Fully developed plants with high concentrations of CBD and THC contain very low concentrations of CBG because most of the CBG has been converted to CBD and THC as the plant develops. Therefore, CBG is derived from young cannabis plants due to containing much higher amounts of CBG than fully developed plants, where it is known as a “rare” or “minor” cannabinoid.

CBG – How does it work?

CBG works by keeping our bodies in an optimal state via the body’s endocannabinoid system which is made up of molecules and receptors. The CBG imitates endocannabinoids, the natural compounds our body makes.

There are two types of cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the brain and nervous system, while receptors CB2 are located in the immune system as well as other areas of the human body. CBG binds these receptors where it’s thought to strengthen each function most which plays a role in enhancing pleasure, motivation, regulating appetite, regulating sleep and alleviating pain. 

This process is known as the ‘entourage effect’ where several different compounds work together to achieve an effect that would be impossible for them to achieve on their own, meaning maximum benefits to users.

The benefits of CBD oil have been well documented and include:

• Circulatory and heart benefits - Some research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressure.
• Pain relief - Studies have shown that CBD could help reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters. Studies have also shown CBD can be effective in treatment for arthritis and rheumatism, migraines and other pains in the body.
• Stress - CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for some mental health disorders, such as anxiety disorders. A couple of drops of CBD oil will ease the symptoms of stress or anxiety and insomnia.
• Skincare - CBD oil is packed full of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties both of which combat oxidative stress that contributes towards the ageing process. It is also rich in nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals and trace elements that help to keep the skin looking and feeling hydrated, preventing the formation of new wrinkles. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD may be particularly useful for reducing potential triggers of eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.
• Acne - CBD oil may help reduce various types of acne due to its ability to adjust how the body creates sebum, the waxy, oily substance the skin makes

Studies into CBG oil are fewer than for CBD oil but they suggest that CBG offers several benefits of its own:

• Appetite loss – it is thought that CBG could stimulate the appetite which could be useful in conditions such as cancer or HIV where appetite loss is common.
• Huntingdon’s disease – CBG might have neuroprotective properties that could help treat Huntingdon’s disease.
• Skin care – CBG has three major benefits to the skin; it is highly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial. Once CBG enters the epidermis (skin), it penetrates to the basal and subcutaneous layers where it helps calm inflammation, purifies pores, reduces blemishes, balances sebum (oil) production and assists with cellular turnover.
• Inflammatory bowel disease – CBG seems to reduce the inflammation associated with this illness.
• Glaucoma – CBG appears to reduce intraocular pressure and so could be effective in treating glaucoma.
• Bladder dysfunctions – CBG appears to affect the contractions of the bladder and so shows promise at treating bladder dysfunctions.
• Bacterial infections – a study in 2008 suggested that CBG can kill bacteria, particular the commonly known, MRSA, which causes drug resistant staphylococcus infections which are hard to treat and can be dangerous.
• Cancer – there is some evidence that CBG might reduce the growth of cancer cells and other tumours.

CBG/CBD Extract – how do I use it?

No preparation is needed before use of our Full Spectrum Organic CBG / CBD. Each person’s biochemistry reacts differently so if you haven’t taken it before, we advise to start on a low dosage and gradually increase it. An effective dose can start at 5 mg per day, and Government guidelines state you should stay within a maximum of 75 mg per day.

Always shake well before use. Place 1-2 drops onto the surface of food or under the tongue twice daily.  Keep the oil in the mouth for 1 minute, then for better absorption and to help with the taste, drink plenty of water afterwards.

IMPORTANT: Not for use by under 18s, not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, do not exceed 70mg per day.
