Over recent years, cannabidiol (CBD) - a common hemp compound - has gained traction as one of the most popular health and wellness ingredients. It can be found in a wide range of products, from edibles to oils, and has been linked with an impressive number of potential benefits. Some consumers report improvements in sleep quality, while others swear by the humble cannabinoid to ease their anxiety.
But the ingredient is also being used by many to support their physical health. So, could CBD help with exercise recovery?
As mentioned above, consumers report using CBD for a huge range of reasons. In 2019, a study found that between 8% and 11% of the UK population had tried a CBD product at least once. This figure has likely grown in the years since. But with so many people using CBD products, what are the most common reasons for their use?
According to a survey of UK CBD consumers in 2021, the most common reason for CBD use was self-perceived anxiety, with almost half (42.6%) of respondents reporting this reason. This was followed by sleep problems (42.5%), stress (37%), and general health and well-being (37%). But more than 10% of people reported that their primary reason for using CBD was for post-workout sore muscles.
Moreover, CBD use has been on the rise among professional athletes and sportspeople who endorse the product for muscle recovery. But what does the evidence say?
Sports and exercise can cause varying degrees of strain on our muscles. Whether you’re a professional or amateur athlete, an avid gym-goer, or a casual yoga class attendee, we’ve all experienced muscle soreness in the days following a workout. For many, the solution to this is simply to grin and bear it, while others may utilise muscle rollers or even painkillers to soothe the pain.
But the use of plant-derived ingredients is also popular for muscle recovery. Products such as ginseng, green tea, and curcumin have all been found to potentially promote recovery from exercise fatigue. And now CBD can be added to this list.
Indeed, some preclinical studies report that CBD may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that could make it useful in a range of applications. Notably, CBD has been shown to induce changes in homeostatic regulators of the inflammatory response to injury, as well as to potentially promote the release of arachidonic acid, which could contribute to greater healing capacity. Moreover, several studies indicate that CBD may be useful in the treatment of pain in some diseases and pain disorders.
All of these findings are extremely promising. However, more research is still needed to determine how CBD may be beneficial for sports recovery and to confirm these early results.
With so many products available, there are many ways you can incorporate CBD into your pre- and post-workout routine. If you’d like to use CBD before a big sports event or exercise session, CBD honeys and CBD Oils can be added to a range of foods and drinks - including your protein shake! Alternatively, simply administer a few drops under your tongue or opt for a CBD edible, like our CBD Gummies.
