Anxiety is one of the most common reasons customers come to us asking about CBD, and it has been since we first started stocking it in 2018. Over seven years of selling organic CBD products, and with feedback from over 10,000 customers, we have developed a clear-eyed view of what CBD can and cannot do in this space. Our position is consistent: the research is promising, but it is still limited.
This guide covers what the science currently says, how to approach CBD safely as a food supplement, and what to look for if you decide it is right for you.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC, it is not psychoactive and will not make you feel "high". CBD food supplements are legally available to adults in the UK, provided the product complies with both the Misuse of Drugs Regulations and the FSA's Novel Food requirements. Not all products on the market meet both requirements, which is one reason why checking a brand's FSA Novel Food status matters before you buy.
Many people are looking for something to sit alongside their existing coping strategies, not replace them. CBD is a food supplement, not a licensed medical treatment for anxiety, and it should never be used to reduce or replace any prescribed medication without first discussing this with your GP.
The clinical evidence base remains limited relative to how widely CBD is already being used. That is not a reason to dismiss it, but it is a reason to be precise about what the studies show.
A 2019 clinical study in The Permanente Journal involving 103 adults found that 79% of participants showed decreased anxiety scores over the first month of CBD use. It was an observational study without a placebo control, which limits how far the findings can be generalised, but the consistency of the reported improvements is meaningful.
Separate research published in Neuropsychopharmacology took a more controlled approach. The 2011 study on CBD and social anxiety, involving 24 participants, found that CBD reduced anxiety symptoms during a simulated public speaking test compared to a placebo. Participants received a single oral dose of 300mg, which is considerably higher than typical consumer serving sizes, so the direct relevance to everyday supplement use is limited.
Preclinical research suggests CBD may act on 5-HT1A serotonin receptors and GABA-A receptors in the brain, both of which are involved in mood regulation and reducing nervous system activity. These mechanisms are biologically plausible, though how they translate to real-world anxiety relief in humans is still being studied.
Most studies use a single controlled dose rather than the sustained daily use that most people actually adopt. It is also worth noting that some people report increased anxiety when first using CBD or at larger serving sizes. If this occurs, reduce your serving size and speak with your GP if symptoms persist. CBD is not a cure for anxiety, and it is not a substitute for professional support.
Different formats suit different lifestyles and preferences. Here is a comparison of the most common options:
|
Format |
How It Works |
Approximate Onset |
Best Suited For |
|
CBD Oil (sublingual) |
Held under the tongue before swallowing |
Often 15-45 minutes |
Flexible daily routine, precise serving sizes |
|
CBD Gummies |
Digested and absorbed through the gut |
Often 45-90 minutes |
Those who prefer a familiar, food-based format |
|
CBD Capsules |
Digested and absorbed through the gut |
Often 45-90 minutes |
People who prefer a consistent, measured serving |
|
CBD Honey |
Consumed directly or stirred into a drink |
Variable, food-based |
A gentler, everyday wellness ritual |
Onset times are approximate and vary between individuals. Do not take an additional serving if you have not felt an effect; wait at least two hours before reassessing, and do not exceed the FSA's recommended daily limit of 70mg.
CBD oil taken under the tongue is often the most practical starting point because serving sizes are easier to adjust, and the onset tends to be quicker than digestion-based formats. If you are unsure which type suits your needs, our guide on full spectrum vs broad spectrum vs CBD isolate explains the key differences in plain terms.

If you are in good health, not taking prescription medication, and not in any of the groups listed below, the following steps offer a measured approach.
Start with a low serving size
According to the Food Standards Agency's consumer guidance on CBD, healthy adults should take no more than 70mg per day from food supplements. This is a precautionary position set while the FSA's full safety review is still in progress, not a confirmed safe maximum. Start well below it and increase gradually. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or taking prescription medication, read the caution section below first.
Choose a quality product
Look for brands that provide independent third-party lab certificates (COAs) confirming CBD content and legal THC limits. At Honey Heaven, all our products come with publicly available lab certificates and our range is registered on the FSA's Novel Food public list, which you can verify directly on the FSA's website.
Be consistent with your timing
CBD is generally more effective when taken consistently over weeks. Picking a time that fits your daily routine and sticking to it will give you a much clearer picture than changing the approach every few days.
Combine it with other wellbeing habits
CBD is most useful as part of a broader approach to anxiety, not in isolation. Adequate sleep, regular movement, time outdoors, and social connection all have a meaningful evidence base. For a broader look at natural approaches, our piece on wellness approaches to support your mental health covers several worth considering alongside CBD.
Our 1000mg Full Spectrum CBD Oil is one of the most reviewed products in our range and is the one we tend to suggest first for anyone new to CBD. At 10% concentration, it delivers 5.4mg per drop, making it easy to start low and adjust gradually. It is Swiss-crafted using CO2 extraction, certified organic, and contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids, including CBDA and CBG. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, with THC below 0.2%, registered on the FSA's Novel Food public list, and independently certified by OFG Organic and Biokontroll. Starting at a manageable concentration gives you a far clearer picture of how CBD fits into your day before considering whether to move to something stronger.

CBD is not suitable for everyone. The FSA advises these groups should not use CBD without speaking to their doctor first:
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Anyone trying to conceive (this applies to both men and women)
Those aged under 18
People taking prescription medications - CBD affects liver enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) responsible for processing a wide range of drugs, which can raise or lower medication levels in the bloodstream. Speak with your pharmacist before using CBD alongside any prescription treatment.
Anyone with a serious medical condition
Commonly reported side effects include tiredness, changes in appetite, and diarrhoea. At higher doses, CBD may also affect liver enzyme levels. If you experience unexpected symptoms after starting CBD, stop use and speak with your GP.
Third-party lab certificates (COAs): Current, publicly available, from an accredited laboratory confirming CBD content per serving and legal THC levels.
Clear milligram labelling: Total CBD per bottle and per serving. Vague percentage claims without a milligram figure are a red flag.
CO2 extraction: The industry benchmark for purity, preserving the cannabinoid profile without solvent residue.
Named organic certification: "Organic" without a certifying body is unverifiable. Look for OFG Organic, Biokontroll, or equivalent.
FSA Novel Food registration: A brand on the FSA's public list is operating with regulatory accountability.
No medical claims: Any product marketing that promises to cure or treat a condition should be treated with scepticism.

The early clinical findings on CBD and anxiety are modest but consistent, and the proposed mechanisms are biologically plausible. This is a food supplement with a still-developing evidence base, not a licensed treatment. Starting low, staying consistent, and choosing products you can verify independently is the most measured approach.
