Each year in the UK, Self Care Week aims to raise awareness about the small changes we can all make to support our health and well-being. Self-care plays a significant role in our health and overall quality of life, so it’s essential we all know how to implement effective tips and techniques to help us live a healthier and happier life. In honour of Self Care Week 2025, we’re going through some of these techniques and delving into the potential of CBD within a wider self-care routine.
Self-Care Week was launched by the Self-Care Forum way back in 2011 as part of their aim to promote important health messages to the wider public. In particular, the organisation strives to empower individuals to be more proactive in managing their own health. Each year, individuals, employers, schools, health care providers, and any member of the public are invited to get involved and spread the word about the importance of self-care.
The Self-Care forum also works year-round to improve how self-care is articulated in policy and practice in the UK. The charity has conducted important research, which has provided valuable insights into perceptions about self-care and guided public policies.
Self-Care Week 2025, which runs from 17-23 November, focuses on ‘Mind & Body’.
The Self-Care Forum defines self-care as “the actions that individuals take for themselves, on behalf of and with others to develop, protect, maintain and improve their health, wellbeing or wellness.”
This can include a wide range of techniques, strategies, and habits that play a role in our overall health. These can range from simple everyday habits to more considered strategies. Moreover, self-care can encompass steps we take to improve our health, from everyday wellbeing through short-term illnesses, right the way through to managing the symptoms of long-term conditions.
Let’s take a look at some examples.
The simplest steps we can take to improve our self-care include everyday choices, including what we eat and our exercise routine. The link between these lifestyle factors and our health and well-being has been well established through observational and clinical studies. In fact, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is now routinely recommended by healthcare professionals as part of a holistic approach to the treatment of many conditions.
While it can often be tempting to skip the meal prep in favour of a takeaway or a frozen pizza, doing so too often can have more of an impact on our health than we might think. Evidence shows that a poor diet, often characterised by factors such as eating too much saturated fats, processed foods, high-sugar and high-salt products, can lead to an increased risk of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and some mood disorders.
