Honey is a natural sweetener, made by busy bees going about their everyday lives, and often gets touted as a healthier alternative. So, let's discuss if honey is a better option for your cup of tea or morning porridge?
Honey vs. Sugar:
While both honey and sugar provide sweetness, they share a similar nutritional profile. Both contain calories and carbohydrates, primarily in the form of fructose and glucose which if over consumed isn’t healthy. However, there are some key differences between these two sweeteners.
Honey is a natural product, straight from the hive of bees whereas sugar, on the other hand, is a highly refined substance. While this refining process creates a consistent product, it also strips away any beneficial nutrients that might have been present from the original, organic product.
Honey contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which provide a micronutrient boost. These are present in very small quantities, but they contribute to honey's potential health benefits, such as its healing properties. Table sugar, on the other hand, offers little to no nutritional value when added to ingredients or in our tea or coffee.
The Sweet Truth is Moderation is Key
While honey might seem like a clear winner on the surface, it's important to remember that it's still a form of sugar. Consuming too much sugar can lead to blood sugar spikes, and weight gain, which leads to other health problems. The NHS recommends limiting free sugars, including honey, to no more than 30 grams per day for adults.
Honey may be a slightly better choice than refined sugar due to its trace nutrients and potential health benefits. If you're looking to cut back on refined sugar, honey can be a helpful substitute in small amounts. But remember, a balanced diet is key to good health. So supplementing your diet with other natural sweeteners like fruit can also be a great way to add sweetness without overdoing it on the sugar.
Enjoy a drizzle of honey in your tea or a spoonful on your yoghurt, but don't go overboard.
