can honey be organic

Yes, honey can be organic!

We import unique premium organic high-quality honeys and other various healthy foods from our home-country of Hungary. Our motto: "Nature's choice for a healthier life'!”.

What makes honey organic?

To be labelled as organic, honey must be free from chemicals and antibiotics, and be independently certified to come from a beehive that is 5 to 8 miles away from the nearest artificial chemical source, i.e. roads, factories, houses, etc.

It is illegal for a honey producer to sell or market a honey as organic if it has not been certified by a government approved organic control body. If a honey labelled as ‘organic’ does not have the code of the certifier, e.g. GB-ORG-06, DE-OKO-001 etc. on the label, then beware - it is not organic!

All our products are 100% pure, natural and certified organic

Hungarian honeys are well known all over the world for their outstanding quality. All our honeys are organic and therefore are GMO free, to be organic means certified free of chemicals.

We offer both single flower pure honey and gourmet creamed honeys with herbs and spices, to make exclusive top-quality healthy products with many delicious flavours. View all of our organic honey collection here.

What is GMO?

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross-breeding methods. These processes do not happen to our honey!

What is Pure honey?

Simply put, pure honey means nothing at all has been added to the honey. No sweeteners, oils or flavours. Note that if a honey states that it is ‘pure honey’, it does not necessarily mean it is organic. Pure honey may come from bees fed sugar solution and it may be pasteurised, filtered and contain chemicals and antibiotics.

You need to look for honey that is both organic and pure. Organic honey is the type of honey to which no ingredient has been added.

Our honey is both organic and pure - that is until we make it even better by adding natural ingredients to make our wonder range including Organic Honey and Ginger, Organic Honey with Egyptian Black Seed, Natural Organic Lavender Honey and more!

What’s the difference between pasteurised and unpasteurised honey?

Most of the honey you find in shops is pasteurised. A high heat is used to kill unwanted yeast, can improve the colour and texture, removes any crystallisation, and extends the shelf life. Many of the beneficial nutrients are also destroyed in the process.

Unlike milk and juice, honey is not pasteurised for food safety reasons but to reduce the chance of fermentation and delays granulation. To pasteurise honey, it's heated to 71°C (160°F) and quickly cooled.

Our honey is NOT pasteurised, it is unpasteurised. The many health benefits of related to honey are specific to not only organic, but unpasteurised honey.

The manufacturing process strips honey; in contrast, organic honey is not tampered with, providing all the healthy benefits natural to the delicious substance.

Health Benefits

Organic honey has been used as a remedy throughout history and has a variety of health benefits and medical uses. Many of these health benefits are specific to organic, or unpasteurised, honey.

Studies have shown organic honey provides a myriad of medicinal attributes, including:

  • A good source of antioxidants: Organic honey contains an array of plant chemicals that act as antioxidants. Some types of honey have as many antioxidants as fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help to protect your body from cell damage due to free radicals.
  • Improved wound healing: Organic honey is used in medical settings to treat wounds because it’s been found to be an effective germ killer and aids in tissue regeneration. Studies show that organic honey can boost healing time and reduce infection.
  • Treatment of coughs and smoother a sore throat: Have a cold? Try a spoonful of organic honey as a sore throat remedy. It also works as a cough suppressant. Research has suggested that organic honey is as effective as dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough medication.
  • Gastrointestinal and digestive issues: Organic honey acts as a probiotic, helping feed the good bacteria in your digestive system to keep your gut healthy. Organic honey is a natural sweetener that is enriched with many essential nutrients, pure glucose and levulose which aids for proper digestion and helps counteract nausea. Organic honey may also help with digestive issues including acid reflux and peptic ulcers. Read our full article on ‘Can honey help with an upset stomach?’.
  • Antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties: Research has shown that organic honey can kill unwanted bacteria and fungus. It naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, an antiseptic. Its effectiveness as an antibacterial or antifungal varies depends on the honey, but it’s clearly more than a folk remedy for these kinds of infections.
  • Help with sleep: Organic honey is so good you might want to keep some beside your bed because eaten just before sleep, it helps you in three ways! Read our page on ‘Can honey help you sleep?’.
  • Preventing heart disease: Free radicals contribute to the ageing process and may also contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as heart disease. Research shows that antioxidant compounds in honey called polyphenols may play a role in preventing these.
  • Immune boosting, anticancer properties: The phytonutrients in honey are responsible for its antioxidant properties, as well as its antibacterial and antifungal power. They’re also thought to be the reason organic honey has shown immune-boosting and anticancer benefits.
  • Helping cardiovascular issues: Honey is a rich source of phenols and other antioxidant compounds and many of these have been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular issues by helping the arteries in your heart dilate, increasing blood flow.
  • Maintaining healthy cholesterol: Science is emerging that suggests that eating high quality, organic honey helps to lower bad LDL cholesterol and therefore also lowers total cholesterol but can also increase levels of good HDL cholesterol.

And of course, it tastes delicious too!
